Paul – Director

Paul Gill - Director, ESS EcologyPaul set up ESS Ecology in 1995 to provide ecological advice initially to the renewable energy market and has since enjoyed success throughout the construction industry.

Paul has an MSc in Environmental Technology (specialising in Ecological Management) from Imperial College London, a BA Honours in Zoology from Oxford University and has twenty-three years experience of biodiversity survey, research and monitoring work.  

He has undertaken large scale surveys of birds, bats and vegetation on over forty onshore development sites, and has surveyed seabirds and marine mammals on eight offshore wind farm sites.  Paul has also surveyed habitat condition and vegetation to NVC and led survey teams over large areas of the Highlands of Scotland.

Marcus – Offshore Manager & Senior Ecologist

Marcus CrossMarcus joined ESS Ecology at the start of 2010 and brings with him over 10 years professional experience in UK environmental management and wildlife conservation acquired through the private, academic and voluntary sectors.  He has experience of working on large multidisciplinary projects including: ornithological impacts of the Replacement Forth Crossing on the Firth of Forth, Forth Islands SPAs, offshore bird surveys for wind farm development and fisheries stock management studies (WESTHER).
 
His key skills include team motivation and leadership, project management, problem solving, negotiating and influencing, which coupled with his enthusiasm drives the delivery of project objectives and goals.  Marcus has a modern approach to ecology that balances the business objectives of the client, satisfies the requirements of statutory bodies and planning authorities whilst securing tangible gains for nature conservation.
 
Marcus has a D.Phil in Environmental Parasitology, a 1st Class BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and Technology and is a full member of Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and sits on their Scottish Committee.

Simon - Ecologist & GIS Manager

Simon PickettSimon has been involved in the field of ecology both as a researcher and as a fieldworker for several years before joining ESS Ecology in April 2010. He has substantial experience managing, designing and supervising various field-based ornithological projects, including the writing of reports and conducting surveys. Simon has particular expertise in statistical modeling, programming, data management and GIS.

During his time with the British Trust for Ornithology he worked on several high profile governmental reports and scientific publications involving work on farmland management for bird conservation, declines in wetland birds and risks of H5N1 avian flu transmission from wild birds to poultry.

Simon has an NVQ Level 2 in Environmental Conservation, a BSc in Zoology with Animal Ecology (Hons), an MSc in Ecology (with distinction) and PhD in Ecology (thesis: Melanin- and carotenoid-based displays as signals of quality in the great tit Parus major).
