Electro-fishing Survey for Wind Farm in Northern Scotland

In a successful tender bid ESS Ecology recently acquired a large scale pre-construction electro-fishing assignment for a wind farm development in Ross-shire that recently was awarded consent. Amongst a number of pre-construction planning conditions, an electro-fishing survey was required on several watercourses within the study area. The survey aimed to establish baseline data on fish populations, which will inform the mitigation strategy and specific mitigation measures to be implemented prior to construction.

Following extensive consultation and agreement with the Fisheries Board over methods, the electrofishing survey was undertaken in August 2009, an optimal time of the year for electro-fishing surveys. ESS Ecology recommends for this type of work to be commissioned between early June and September as it avoids the spawning season and takes advantage of low flow periods. A meeting to be held this autumn will focus on the survey results and suitable mitigation measures.
