ESS Ecology tasked with Bird Hazard Management Study in Aberdeen

Bird concentrations in the vicinity of airports are considered hazardous for air traffic as aircraft collisions with flocks or even single (large) birds can cause major incidents. Planning conditions for a mixed used development in Aberdeen included the need for a Bird Hazard Management Plan due to the site's proximity to Dyce Airport. In order to fulfil this condition ESS Ecology were asked to undertake the survey work and associated reporting. An assessment was carried out in October 2009 to establish the current and future potential for building features and habitats to interact with the bird communities present or likely to be present on the site and its immediate surroundings in such a way as to elevate collision risk. Due to the generic nature of such assessments, survey work can be undertaken year round.

The management plan outlined recommendations to avoid or minimise bird utilisation of the development, through e.g. the installation of bird deterrents, alterations to the building features, style and tailored planting schemes. A detailed Bird Hazard Management protocol was also included. The final report for this project is currently with the relevant authorities for review.
