Senior Ecologist

ESS Ecology (Environmentally Sustainable Systems Ltd) is a well established ecological consultancy operating primarily in the renewable energy market.

With current growth and expansion we are currently seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist with exceptional project management expertise, good knowledge of GIS and database management, and excellent survey skills. The successful candidate will be an experienced ecologist who has worked in consultancy, with some experience of European Protected Species and seabirds.

The role of this post will be to manage projects, undertake a variety of ecological surveys and assist in the production of reports. The post will be based in Edinburgh, Scotland

Senior Ecologist - Key responsibilities will include to:

  • undertake a variety of ecological surveys including European Protected Species, seabirds and marine mammals;
  • assist with report writing and Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA); and
  • produce maps in GIS and manage databases.

Essential criteria:

  • Ecology or zoology degree or diploma or equivalent;
  • 2-4+ years ecological experience in consultancy;
  • Experience in surveying birds;
  • Excellent clear report writing skills;
  • Experience of project management;• Track record in delivering high quality outputs;
  • Understanding and ideally experience of EcIA procedures;
  • Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills; and
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and also within a team.

Desirable criteria:

  • A relevant Masters degree in ecology or equivalent;
  • Experience of construction projects with CSCS/ECoW responsibilities;
  • Proven experience using ArcView GIS and Microsoft Access;
  • Understanding of planning, policy and wildlife legislation; and
  • Associate or Full membership of IEEM or equivalent.
