About Us

Forth Bridge EdinburghEnvironmentally Sustainable Systems Ltd., trading in the Ecological Consultancy sector as ESS Ecology, was set up in 1995, by Director Paul Gill.

Our mission:

‘To provide ecological services to projects that contribute to sustainable development’

Based in Edinburgh ESS Ecology operates throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and in offshore territorial waters throughout the world.

ESS Ecology has focussed on the renewable energy sector and has proved to be highly successful, particularly in the offshore market. This extensive experience has been built upon thorough Scoping, Zone Appraisal Planning, Ecological Impact Assessments, Cumulative and Appropriate Assessments, and Statistical Change Analyses and Monitoring Studies with our partners BioSS following the current guidelines as set out by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM).

The company, initially renowned for its ornithological capabilities, has grown considerably over the years and diversified into other market segments seamlessly; our skill base now covers a much broader spectrum both off and onshore. It is this range of experience across a variety of development types that sets ESS Ecology apart from most ecological consultancies.

ESS Ecology works to the highest professional standards of service; integrity is at the heart of what we do and steers the focus and strategy of the company. Our ecologists and project managers follow IEEM best practice guidance and utilise their excellent communication skills to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Our breadth of experience allows us to look further than the obvious and assess any particular project beyond the generic and repetitive processes that occur when dealing with cases of a similar nature. Clients are therefore provided with innovative, cost effective solutions that meet statutory guidelines and increase the likelihood of development proceeding whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
