About Us

Forth Bridge EdinburghEnvironmentally Sustainable Systems Ltd (ESS Ltd), now trading as ESS Ecology, was set up in 1995, by Director Paul Gill.

Our mission:

‘To provide ecological services to projects that contribute to sustainable development’

Based in Edinburgh ESS Ecology operates primarily in Scotland and Northern England and offshore territorial waters; with the use of local surveyors we can be competitive throughout England and Wales.

Initially ESS Ecology focussed on the renewable energy market and proved to be highly successful, primarily offshore, unlike many of our competitors.  This extensive experience means we regularly undertake full Ecological Impact Assessments – producing the ecology chapters, following the current guidelines as set out be the Insitute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM), which are incorporated within a wider Environmental Statement (ES) as part of a planning submission.

The company, initially renowned for its ornithological capabilities, has grown considerably over the years and diversified into other market segments seamlessly; our skill base now covers a much broader spectrum both off and onshore.  It is this range of experience across a variety of development types that sets ESS Ecology apart from most ecological consultancies.

ESS Ecology works to the highest professional standards of service; integrity is at the heart of what we do and steers the focus and strategy of the company.  Our highly trained in-house team, follow IEEM best practice guidance and possess excellent communication skills utilised to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Our breadth of experience allows us to look beyond the obvious and assess any particular project beyond the generic and repetitive process that occurs when dealing with cases of a similar nature.  Clients are therefore provided with innovative, cost effective solutions that adhere to statutory guidelines and guarantee development proceeds whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
